Every changing table comes with a single strap across the middle. It looks reassuring, but a determined baby twists and crawls out from under it. Babies reach new milestones without warning. A baby can roll over for the first time and right off the changing table before anyone knew it was coming. Unfortunately, a fall can happen in the seconds it takes to reach for a wipe.
- 17,800 babies fell off changing tables in the United States in 2022.
- 5,400 were treated in emergency rooms for serious injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, skull fractures, and complicated limb fractures.
- 1 in 274 infants under one year old will fall from a changing table.

Why we built it
I am Dr. Marchita Masters, a psychologist and a grandmother. I watched my granddaughter Charley escape the strap on our standard changing table repeatedly, no matter how much we tightened the strap.
I spent my career studying how people actually behave, not how we wish they would. I partnered with Dr. Michael Owens, a distinguished medical doctor, to build Kita Babe around what a real parent does with one hand trying to keep the baby steady and the other reaching for a wipe or change of clothes. Charley was our first demo baby and Kita Babe was my childhood nickname.
Where Kita Babe is now
In pilot, and in testing.
- An international patent is pending.
- Three daycare centers that diaper babies all day every day have piloted Kita Babe and love it. Two rounds are complete, with a third planned as updated samples arrive.
- CPSC testing is arranged and set to begin once the updated samples are sent.
